Jersey is a fabric which people are nervous to sew with, we want to change that, we want to show you how easy it is. Two different patterns to choose will give you the confidence and will suit your current skill level, it also means you can come with a friend who may not be at the same skill level as you.

The two patterns to choose from:

The Coco Dress by Tilly and the buttons is a great intro to jersey, perfect for someone who is ok with patterns already but wants to learn the tricks of the jersey sewing trade.

The Billy Sweater by Tilly and the Buttons is a great jumper pattern. Learn tricks of jersey sewing & attaching ribbing. In this class if you choose this pattern you will be making the jumper version with the simple sleeves rather than with the gathered sleeves.

When deciding on your pattern please discuss with us your sewing level and we can guide you to the best pattern.

Your sewing will generally follow this plan, to start with you will discuss your patterns, you will be taught how to measure properly and then choose which size you will be making. From there you will be guided through the tracing of your pattern, pining to your fabric and the transferring of markings from your pattern onto your fabric. Then it is time to cut.

You may get further than this or be at this point when we will break for lunch. The break will be for 30 mins.

In the afternoon you will get down to the sewing where you will be talked through all the different parts of your patterns whether there are zips to insert, facings, pockets, cuffs, whichever dress you are working on your will have guidance through the process.

What you will learn depending on which pattern you choose to make:

Selecting the correct size for you

Drafting a simple pattern

Altering the pattern length

Cutting out pattern from fabric

Transferring pattern markings

Pattern matching

What needle to sew with

What stitch to use

Hemming techniques

Testimonial

I attended the Jersey workshop yesterday (Christmas present from son and his partner) and I came away walking on air. Been sewing all my life (a long time!!) but have recently lost confidence due to a lot of failures. I learned so much from Angela, our fabulously knowledgeable tutor, who taught us how to adjust a pattern for made to measure and handle and respect different types of fabrics. I ended up with the tunic dress in the photograph using the Tilly and the Buttons Coco pattern. I was a bit pushed for time at the end of the session so it could do with an iron on the seams and hem, but I am absolutely delighted with the outcome and will certainly be on the lookout for other courses run by Make at 140!

Testimonials

Thank you so much for my necklace and earrings. My sons were quite bemused that a vendor knew me by name and your personal touch made us all feel good. So much nicer than the faceless Amazon or even the posh mens clothing stores that I frequented (virtually) over Christmas.

I love the necklace and earrings - you were right they do match and I will share your site with friends

Myself and my daughter came in to choose a pattern to get us back into sewing again. Lizzy was so helpful, talking us through all of the patterns she has and what fabrics would suit the pattern and our skill level. We are so exicited to get started and thats thanks to Lizzy's patience and help in the shop. We can't wait to come on one of your workshops.
