The beginners sewing courses will currently be run over 2 days or over 4 sessions either evening or daytime.
Do you have a sewing machine hidden in a cupboard that you want to learn all about? Or do you have a need to learn to sew but don’t even have a sewing machine yet? We can help.
Our beginners sewing course is designed for people who have never used a sewing machine before or for those who need a good refresher after having been away from it for a long time.
From the first steps of threading your machine to sewing your first garment. Over the 11 hour course you will be given step by step tuition learning all about your sewing machine, sewing a tote bag and finally sewing your own top.
What you will learn:
Introduce parts of your machine
Show how to thread the machine and bobbin
Sew straight stitch and zig zag stitch/Look at thread tension and problems
Look at machine accessories, ie feet, needles, cleaning equipment and oil
Sewing in a straight line
Sewing and finishing seams
The basics of bag making
Measuring and choosing the right size for you
Assembling a pattern
Pattern Marking
Cutting out the fabric according to the pattern
Seam techniques
Attaching a facing
What you will need:
Sewing machine threaded and working (if you require to use one of our machines you will to advise us during booking as we have a limited amount of machines available)
Sewing kit
Fabric and notions for your bag and top pattern size and length – a detailed tick list will be sent to you once you have booked on the course with full details. We will guide you and give you all the info when you book.
The Top you will be making is the Tilly and the Buttons Stevie top which you can see in the photos, a loose fitting top perfect to introduce you to dressmaking.
