"Dress" Making

Making a dress includes several skills which can be daunting but during this workshop you will watch a series of demonstrations and be given lots of support to guide you towards a beautiful finished garment.

Choose from three different dress patterns to suit your skill level.

The three patterns to choose from:

1.       “The Stevie Dress” by Tilly and the Buttons. Perfect for the beginner, this dress has a simple, flattering shape but will introduce a number of basic skills.

2.       “The Dress Shirt” by Merchant and Mills. This suits the slightly more confident sewist and skills include inserting sleeves, attaching facings and adding details to complete this casual and comfortable dress.

3.       “The Day Dress” by the Avid Seamstress. Suitable for those wanting more of a challenge, this dress includes fitted bodice, invisible zip, gathered skirt and inner pockets.

When deciding on your pattern please discuss with us your sewing level and we can guide you to the best pattern.

Your sewing will generally follow this plan; to start with you will discuss your patterns, you will be taught how to measure properly and then choose which size you will be making. From there you will be guided through the tracing of your pattern, pinning to your fabric and the transferring of markings from your pattern onto your fabric. Then it is time to cut.

You may get further than this or be at this point when we will break for lunch. You can purchase food from the gorgeous Column bakehouse downstairs or feel free to bring a packed lunch and make the most of the beautiful RWY. The break will be for 30 mins.

In the afternoon you will continue to sew your chosen dress. As in the morning, you will be shown short demonstrations of skills, receive supportive handouts and be given independent guidance and support.
