Trouser Pattern Cutting Masterclass

Working with our expert pattern cutter and from a creative pattern cutting book you will learn how to draft a trouser pattern to fit your personal measurements.

You will learn the difference between a draft, a block and a pattern, where and why grainlines and notches are created and how to make simple changes to a basic shape.

After creating the pattern you will make a toile from calico (or similar fabric), this will be fitted on you.

The alterations pinned on the toile will then be transferred to the pattern draft which should ensure any trousers you make in future are a good fit for you.

Following this we will look at the design of trouser you would like to make and manipulate your personal block to create the pattern for this.

If time allows your final trouser design will be cut and made in your desired fabric. Although please note you may not leave with a completed pair of trousers.

What you will learn:

How to measure your body.

Creating your own pattern block.

Understanding the terminology of the pattern cutting book which will help you develop more blocks and patterns in the future.

How to fit garments onto the body.

Manipulation of patterns to create different styles.

What you will need: 

A sewing machine – if you need to use one of ours please let us know when you book

A basic sewing kit – scissors, pins tape measure etc – we do have a supply of these if you need to use ours. 

Calico or similar fabric for the toile.

An image of the trouser you would like to create on the final day.

Fabric for your final garment.

Pattern master, and / or long and short ruler.

6m of dots and crosses pattern paper (this can be purchased in the make shop with 10% off)

Level:

Intermediate – advanced

Must be able to sew and have some knowledge of domestic pattern use.

Please note we try to calculate how long a workshop will be and plan to finish each garment in the allocated time but this isn’t always possible, If you are unable to finish in the workshop time we will make sure you are confident with your garment to be finished at home.
